Hello, We are Big Timber - a family-run resort 25 miles north of Grand Rapids on the Edge of the Wilderness Byway.

The resort is situated on the eastern shore of North Star Lake and is full of Northwoods charm.  We enjoy great fishing, a friendly atmosphere and absolutely stunning sunsets.

We have 7 very comfortable, very clean, well-maintained cabins. All of our housekeeping cabins have a full kitchen and bathroom. Each has an outside deck with a picnic table and an outdoor grill.  Our cabins have Roku TVs, Blue-ray players and free WIFI is available in each cabin.  We have a variety of onsite activities for people of all ages to enjoy.  There are fishing boats and pontoons available to rent, water toys and a fabulous beach for relaxing.  There are also several fire pits on the resort where families can gather around a campfire to roast marshmallows and tell stories.

Big Timber Resort was originally founded in 1934. Since then, people have enjoyed coming here to play on the beach, relax with family and of course, to fish. More than 80 years later, the story is still the same. We take great pride in helping people have a great experience while on vacation here in Northern Minnesota. Whether you are a couple enjoying a weekend fall getaway, a family looking to relax for a week in the summer or a group coming to be on the water and catch fish, we would be very pleased to host you!

About Your Hosts

Meet your hosts here at Big Timber... Craig and Lisa Knutson.  For years, both Craig and Lisa dreamed of owning and operating a small, family oriented, outdoor recreation resort. In January 2020 that dream became a reality when they purchased Big Timber. Craig loves fishing, hunting and playing hockey with the "old timers". He was born and raised a true Minnesotan. He grew up going to Northern Minnesota and Canada on fishing trips with his dad and he has countless stories to tell of his adventures.  Lisa loves the outdoors and hunting too - except she loves hunting for antiques.  She was born and raised in California (please don't hold that against her) and spent 22 years teaching 7th and 8th graders there.  In 2012, she finally got wise, decided to leave the craziness of the west coast and made a move to the more tranquil territory of Minnesota.

In 2016, Craig and Lisa met on an online dating site (That's a whole different story), and were married later that year.  There were many things that drew them together, but one of them was the fact that they both had a life-long dream to own and operate a family resort. After much work and research and hunting... they found Big Timber.  As soon as they drove down the beautiful, tree lined driveway, saw the charming cabins and gorgeous views; they knew they were home.

Joining Craig and Lisa on the resort is Lisa's mom, Joyce. She is the resort Grammy. You may see her around the resort chatting with guests, popping popcorn, tending the lodge snack bar or working on any number of projects that she might be undertaking at the time. Craig, Lisa and Joyce welcome you to their resort and will be at your service to help provide a phenomenal experience for you and your family.
